This internship taught me a lot about my college path because of the people around me. Before I came to Interfaith I wanted to become a chef. I felt like it was the right path for me and that I should do an internship that involved food. I had a different internship at first which was involving food. I quickly realized that this was not the thing for me and it did not end up working out for multiple reasons, which I am honestly glad that I found out so quick. I then ended up at Interfaith, which was a place that I didn't expect to be at. I met a bunch of amazing people. They all told me to always do what your passionate about and around this time I found my calling. They were just very encouraging and that helped me a lot. I did find out a lot about myself such as how I do not feel motivated to do things that I am not interested in. I struggled with this for a while but coming to Interfaith really helped me fix that by just learning to do things that need to be done even if I do not like it. It was a good responsibility to take on but it was good for me. Something that I always knew was that I really enjoy listening and making music so going in the path of their advice I would like to go into something with music or media. This lead me to my career choice, which is music production.
This experience really helped with choosing my future because I know that I have narrowed my options down from originally trying to be a chef. I am very glad that I got to experience all of internship so that it can help me decide on what I want to do. The colleges I mainly want to go to a school called UAT because it has a Digital media major and I feel like I can benefit from that. This school is pretty similar to High Tech which is also good because it can make the transition from high school to college easier. This school also accepts you based on your passion not from your scores and GPA which I find important because not everything should be based on scores. In the end I just feel like I found out more about myself and more about what I want to do with my life. I feel more prepared overall for college and my life to come now that I know what direction that I want to take in my life. I feel like I have more discipline because of my hours and the work I was doing. I would wake up everyday at about 5:30 to get to internship. I would be very tired at the end of the day but I alway knew I had to push through to get the week done. This will help with college with a lot of things because discipline is a big part of things when you have to do everything on your own in college. I feel just overall ready for what life has to throw at me since this month has not been easy and life wont be either. My plan for my career now is to go to college to get better with the equipment and the media types that I will be using and then I will be furthering my skills by exploring what types of music I like. After I am done with college I want to start making my own music and maybe own my own music studio where I can help other people out that were like me once because that can give them a good start in the music industry.

For my project I did interviews on a few of my coworkers to get an insight on how my coworkers feel about their jobs. I asked them a series of questions such as, "what brought you to Interfaith?", "What motivates you everyday?", "What is your favorite part of working here?", "Do you see yourself at Interfaith in five years?" I chose to interview my mentor, two volunteers and the volunteer coordinator to get a variety of answers. It did help to get there different perspectives because they worked in different areas and had different perspectives. This project is important because it can give a good insight to people who might be interested in these areas because the questions themselves can provoke very honest opinions. The honest opinion of these people can help them decide if something like this will be of interest in their future or it can just enlighten people who are curious about these jobs. The process that I had to go through for this project was mainly about planing and timing. I thought for a while about the questions and figured that I would use questions that I personally wanted answered. Also when it comes to timing i had to make sure the people had free time so that it was not really rushed. I also had to think about who I was going to interview and where. I decided to interview the people I did because they all did something different and I could get a good variety of answers based off of that even if they didn't go into depth. I also chose to keep it simple and in their own area such as the volunteer coordinator in her office and the two volunteers in the pantry so that they would be more comfortable and so that it can be more convenient for everyone. I think it turned out pretty well and I was satisfied with the answers that I got for these interviews. It all went as planned and Im happy about that. You can find my final interviews below. POL SlidesHow did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
- I made a meaningful contribution to the workplace by taking a lot of the workload off of a person who recently got injured on the job and can't work as much so I made up for what he couldn't carry for the time being and then some. I really found out more ways to appreciate call aspects of life and realize that where I am at is not as bad as it could be. I did everything I could to make the people who were lifting work as small as possible by doing everything I can to help. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? - This work was very meaningful to my education because of how I learned new skills and new ways to see, think and feel. I learned a lot more than I thought I was going to. I hope that future people who do this internship really seize the time they get and make the most out of it like I did. I think this was very useful and I appreciate it, How might internship influence the direction of your life? - I think it will affect my life in a positive way because it gave me time to see other points of view in life, I think it'll make me take less things for granted and understand other stories and how they ended up where they are. I also think it will help me making choices in life and where I would want to go with it, How did interpersonal relationships and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of life outside of high school? - The relationships that I have made with the staff is awesome, they are really cool people and are doing what they do for others and increasing other quality of life, they are very heart filled people. I enjoy being around the people there and it makes me feel like a better person when I have such positive people around me.
I do self advocate because I do ask questions when I am confused and when I am not sure what I should be doing. It can be a good thing and a bad thing because sometimes when I speak up about certain things then it can be taken wrong I have learned. When first learning things I did of course ask questions because that is how you learn. I also made sure that I watched them do the task so that I would have to ask over and over again I could just observe and take it in. In the mornings when I get there I work on what I am assigned and what they tell me to do in that moment and if I don't understand it I do ask questions but sometimes I seem a bit rude because I am very forward which can come off a bit strong but I am working on it so that my coworkers like me. I do know that people can get frustrated when it comes to people asking questions multiple times but I do it to make sure that I know it instead of not knowing and not doing it or doing it wrong. I feel more comfortable asking questions and being self advocate because my co workers do the same, everyone does so that they know what is going on.
The thing about following "How to be an Intern that everyone remembers" is that it is very short and bland on requirements. I can see how people do these certain things but it has to be in a certain setting. For me I do not have meetings so I already can cross that off, its not because I do not go to them its because my job is not about that. I do try to keep busy but as it says it really can be hard to find work for interns to do so sometimes I can am not doing something in that moment, which can look bad. I could try to actively search for more work to do and take more initiative. I did get to know my colleges early because there inst many of us. There is about three people who do the job and we are together the whole time I am at internship. I show up usually on time or early so that I can get there before they leave or before they start something and I can't find them. I do not have to dress professionally because we are moving around and doing more of the physical work. I can maybe improve on that by wearing a shirt from Interfaith or a collared shirt. The project that I will be doing is a video about the work I am doing along with some interviews from my coworkers. I will take pictures and video clips of my day along with a few extra thing like the interviews or stories I have from it. I will interview my coworkers and mentor so I can get an insight on what they like about the job, why they chose it and what is the most fulfilling part of this job. I will need to have the skill of time management and leadership. I need to manage my time well because along with my project I will have to work there still and make sure that I have both things balanced. It will help to keep track of the time I am taking and on what I am doing so I can get all of it done before the day ends. I will need leadership skills because in my own project I will have to do it all by myself and which means that I can't rely on others. I need to know how to be my own boss and make sure that I don't slack off or try to wait for someone else to do it because I am the only one doing my project which means I am the only one responsible. I will need cooperation and support from my coworkers because without their support I might not be able to get the right content such as their interview or them allowing me to take videos and pictures when I need to get.
What is your job title? -Warehouse assistant What are your main duties and responsibilities? - from Monday thru Friday Cesar and I have a route in which we pick up donations from different grocery stores around Escondido,ca. - we also train volunteers and work with different youth groups - after finishing up with food donations we make sure pantry is fully stocked before heading out to work on furniture pick ups. - we also help homeless people move into their new apartments issued with the help of interfaith. Why did you choose to work here? - I choose to work here because they are flexible with my school schedule. How did you end up doing the job that you do? - I quit my other job because they didn’t want to be flexible with my school schedule. So, I saw that they had a job posting online and I applied. What skills and training are necessary for your position? - You have to get forklift certification. That’s pretty much it the rest is just physical labor. How did you acquire these skills? Through school? On the job? - I was a certified forklift operator for a different job. The rest I feel that I just learned on the job itself. Do you consider a career in this area satisfying? In what ways? -Yes, because all day you are helping people in need. At the end of every day I go home knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It’s a great feeling! Is there anything you wish you'd realized about the world of work when you were my age? - I wish I realized how important education really is. I started working at 13 so I would always push school to the side and want to only work instead of focusing on my school work. Questions about the organization What should I know about this organization before I start working here? - Great organization that makes a difference in San Diego to help our neighbors in need. What is a typical work day like? -food pick ups in the mornings - pantry stocking in the late morning - furniture pick ups/ helping people move into their new apartments -Cleaning and organizing the warehouse -Clean company vehicles at the end of the day and make sure they have gas for the next day What is the purpose of this organization? - our mission is to help people help themselves. - We offer many different types of services like financial services, recovery from alcoholism and drugs, and in general just help people with whatever problems that they might be facing Reflection How does the circle go around and how does everyone get paid? I can relate school and my internship because its work that helps others. I think that they both have good qualities in increasing your intellect. Something cool is when we give out tons of free food to a ton of people. A skill that I will need is focus and persistence. It is a hard long job. The thing that strikes me the most about my internship at Interfaith is that they give back a lot more than I thought. I was moving around furniture that we are going to give to people in need and we had so much to give out for free. I would have never thought something like this exists if I didn't come here. What strikes me most about my colleagues is that they are pretty nice people and they seem dedicated to their work which is a good thing. The job I am doing is moving furniture to people's homes that are in need so that they can have something they might have never had before in their lives. I think that this job was something that I didn't really picture doing in the beginning so all of it surprised me. I feel good giving back and it surprises me how much they give back. I got to work in the pantry also and it was cool because I got to stock up and work with new people who showed me how to do it. Everyone seems really nice here and I look forward to meeting new people. I am excited to see what my month will contain and who I will meet along with the people we will be helping. I am worried about not doing enough and I hope that when I feel I am doing my best that they think the same so that they do not get disappointed in me and I get confused.
